Bringing your antiques back to life
We recently read an article in the Knoxville New Sentinel that we wanted to share with all of our antique-loving readers. The article makes a great point about re-using antiques, including architectural elements. The interior designer interviewed emphasized that it’s all about taking one piece at a time and giving it a new identity in your home. Something we’re quite familiar with ourselves! We especially love how they talked about all of the things you can do with smaller antiques. The article suggests using smaller antique items as book ends, garden statues, and even storage containers. Great ideas! Check out this antique door ...
Ensuring your antiques’ authenticity
One of the questions we get asked most frequently is, “How can I ensure that these pieces are authentic?” That’s a great question, and there are many ways to do this. One of the less technical, and often quicker and less costly ways involves using a black light to test different materials within the antique for dating. Antique HQ suggests using a black light to find certain colorings and markings that aren’t visible to the naked eye. While they admit that it’s not the end-all for figuring antiques’ authenticity, it’s definitely a good place to start on your own. Here are ...
Reclaimed card catalog makes a great wine cellar
We were absolutely ecstatic to see a sommelier's blog featuring a reclaimed library card catalog being used as a wine cellar. Put in the right place, the vintage card catalog would easily blend in as furniture, but serve as functional short-term wine storage. It'd be easy to label which wines are which, too. We love it! In the original post, the writer tells about how she decided to use the piece her husband found on Craigslist. When the catalog arrived, I was surprised by how beautiful it was and it is exceptionally heavy and large but the question remained, what are we going to do with it? I ...
Imagine this deco vintage piece in your space
Here's one of the items we recently built from materials salvaged in Italy. They came over in a container earlier in March. This was created with materials all salvaged from an Italian farmhouse. Behind the rustic wood shelves, the antique tin ceiling from the Italian home's original kitchen is repurposed and side iron bars were part of the front gate. Pieces from all over the property combined to make this gorgeous shelving. We love this piece because it can be used for so many things. A bookshelf in a bedroom or living room. A set of shelves in your ...

Antique French Armoires
Posted on July 28, 2010 · Leave a CommentWhile armoires are a popular component in modern-day home decor, their origins date back to the 17th century. As it’s French etymology implies, armoires were traditionally used for weaponry storage. Since the 1600s, armoires have transcended their original purpose and are now used to adorn home decor designs. The classic French look of armoires is heavily sought after, as the furniture portrays elegance, beauty, and sophistication.
During the 20th century, the use of armoires transitioned to bedrooms, as the armoires were mainly used to store personal items such as clothing and jewelry.
Today, armoires serve as multifunctional furniture pieces in the home. But what ever function it serves for you, make sure that the style of the armoire is consistent with the other furnishings in your home. Armoires are decorative pieces that enhance your decor and should not detract from the flow of your overall home decor design.

How To Select Your Stained Glass
Posted on July 20, 2010 · Leave a CommentBefore you make your next stained glass purchase, there are a few things you should know. We have some great tips that will help you in the process of selecting stained glass. Because stained glass can add visual intrigue and value to your home, we want you to make the best decision suitable for your design needs.
Examine the Stained Glass
Before buying stained glass, you should always compare antique stained glass to new stained glass. Comparing the two types will allow you to compare the quality of the glass. During your examination of the stained glass, be certain to look for defects such as chipped pieces.
Verify Authenticity
Verify that the glass is actually stained, and is not a semi-transparent vinyl that sticks to a window pane. While vinyl overlay is an alternative to stained glass, the overlay must be replaced within 15 years. Real stained glass lasts for up to 100 years before restoration is needed, and costs more than vinyl overlay. Before purchasing your stained glass, determine which type of glass you have. Doing so will ensure that you aren’t paying stained glass prices for vinyl overlay.
Choosing a Vendor
If you can, choose your stained glass from a local vendor. Actually viewing and evaluating your stained glass prior to purchase will ensure that you are getting exactly what you want.
We hope you find these tips helpful the next time you decide to shop for stained glass.
